Online Gaming Lamers
A-KO, [Comment] 1/19/2002 1:59:00 PM CST
You know, for my first time playing CounterStrike above 2 minutes, I have grown to actually enjoy this game. There are a few perks about it that I don't like, but otherwise it's a really cool game. Yes, I'm years behind. Anyways, the problem comes in with the lamers. A group of nothing but 12 year olds from around the US and the world wish to do nothing but ruin the gaming experience for others. It's absurd and it's annoying. However, I'm not getting pissed.

I have come to the distinct conclusion there that is only one solution to this problem, and you all wouldn't like it. Games that run entirely off of the internet and nothing else. .NET-based games, software-as-a-service. This seems the only way to be able to prevent cheaters. As much as I'd hate to have it, it seems like the only way. *sighs*

Counterstrike 1.4 Beta
A-KO, [News] 1/16/2002 10:36:00 PM CST
Valve has finally released to public testing, CounterStrike 1.4. Well, not public testing. It's more like a public private test. Each user gets a username/account key to join in.

I'm not that much of a Half-Life or CounterStrike player although I will play for the duration of the test. I'm always open for some new enjoyments. But from my experience so far, it's good gameplay, nice and smoooth graphics.

Benefits of being a beta tester: You do not have to own the software to play the software. I have my copy of half life installed, but that's it. I did not have CS installed. It downloaded all the files needed for gameplay. It also uses a different service than WON to join the games. Therefore I don't need a WON CD key for CS. Post in the forums any complaints about CounterStrike 1.3 and I will look out for them in the beta for you. Since I don't know what to look for, you all can be a big help.

IRC Channel #gbg
Zoob, [Features] 1/16/2002 11:21:00 AM CST
Thanks to the people at Lyra Studios (makers of Underlight), they've given us an irc channel all for ourselves!

You can reach it by connecting to irc.lyrastudios.com:6667 with your irc client, and joining the channel #gbg

This is another vehicle for us to provide communications, as well as if we ever do chat interviews with developers or publishers, we can use this channel!

Special thanks to Lyra Studios, specifically Mike Fisher, for getting this set up for us.

Look soon, for a link on the left side to allow you to easily connect to the IRC channel (have to make the graphic and blurb yet...)

Duke Nukem Forever confirmed release date
A-KO, [News] 1/6/2002 5:30:00 PM CST
Amazon.com slips up again with putting products up for sale long before they are out. This time, it's the long awaited game Duke Nukem Forever. The release date is March 8, 2002. However this may or may NOT be the official US release date. Since Amazon in the UK is the only one that has released this info. It will cost 27.99 ; $40.00 US ; and 45 € (Euro Dollar). To pre-order your copy in the UK, go here.

On a side note, I have now become a beta tester for the OpenGL conversion of the popular Duke Nukem 3D game, GLDuke. It has come a long way but still has a long way to go. I am proud to announce it now successfully works in the Windows 2000/XP Operating systems. Something that was not available before. Thanks to my friend LocKDowN for getting it to work, and thanks to JPD, the programmer for GLDuke, for allowing him to view the source and get it working. It is somewhat difficult to get screenshots, and I'd love to grab a bunch for everyone and host them up on the site here. If anyone has any questions about GLDuke, feel free to post on the forum or directly email me. I keep close tabs on this project because it's the last one that has to be done for these old games. There were remakes of GLQuake and Doom.

Infogrames Confirms Unreal Tournament 2
Tack, [News] 1/5/2002 11:47:00 PM CST
Got an e-mail from my pal Matt Frary at Infogrames. Apparently, they are ready to admit that there really is an Unreal Tournament 2 in development, which would put the number of "Unreal" titles in development at three (Unreal II for the PC and Unreal Championship for the Xbox being the other two). The following is the e-mail I got from Matt:
Infogrames confirms Unreal Tournament 2 in the making by Digital Extremes. As rumored all week online, the co-creators of Unreal and Unreal Tournament are currently working on the sequel to the infamous 1999 Game of the Year.

Late next week, in conjunction with the February issue of PC Gamer, Infogrames will officially announce the game and detail all the news currently available at this point in development. The cover story includes an in-depth interview with the development team at Digital Extremes, specifics about the gameplay and globally exclusive artwork to be seen only in PC Gamer.

Happy New Year
A-KO, [misc] 12/31/2001 1:50:00 PM CST
In many parts of the world, this is the new year. The year 2002, although the calendar may be off by a few years from how it was estimated. This new year, look forward to buying all that new PC hardware, look forward to that new job, to that new life. I look forward to getting out of high school at the end of this month(hopefully, if I can get some paperwork done in time), and I also look forward to beginning the first year of my life that I actually feel like a SOMEBODY. Yes, that's right. I will no longer be in high school, I will have a job, I have friends, and I'll be turning 18 in early March. For me, this is the beginning of the rest of my life. I know for many of you, the same thing goes. Enjoy it. Make use of it. Many people say I have a pessimistic view of life. Learn to do something. Get out and about. Learn that programming language. Design that webpage. Buy that new PC. Make 2002 a year for PC recovery. This is OUR year. Start it off nicely =P

Okay, I've said enough. Happy New Year everyone!

A-KO's Holiday Shopping Guide
A-KO, [News] 12/17/2001 8:16:00 PM CST
With everyone going out and purchasing that brand new xbox, that brand new gamecube, or their PS2 and GTA3 for the holidays, one has to wonder where did all the PC gamers go? Wasn't it just a few months ago that we said consoles could not match the power of PCs? There are still some of us left over. We sit here, pondering what next to buy to handle the power of games. Until then, I've thrown together a list of some interesting games for the PC that you can purchase for someone. Most of these games are violent in nature, so if you're heavy into that ESRB stuff, then don't buy these games.
  • Return To Castle Wolfenstein: You are thrown back into Castle Wolfenstein to once again do battle against Nazi Germany. With far many more enhancements than it's 10 year old brother, RTCW fully immerses you in stunning visual gameplay, incredible enemy AI, and forcing you to use different tactics than previous first person shooters. This is my top pick of the holiday season. It is sure one that would get that tear of joy from your avid PC gamer. Cost: $55 US ; $65 US for Tin-boxed special edition. Don't feel like going to the store? Here's a URL to EBStore.com
  • Everquest: Shadows of Luclin: Want that hip game that everyone is talking about? Then you need Everquest. This is an update to the very popular Everquest series. It adds new models, new textures, and various other new things that will be sure to immerse you farther into the Everquest world than ever before. Geforce 3 and 512MB ram recommended! Does Require Original Game!!Cost: $30 US ; $10 per month, payable in installments for 3 months, 6 months, or one year.(Going by what a friend said for monthly pricing) Purchase Here!
  • The Sims: Hot Date: Ever enjoy commanding people what to do? Did you always like the Sims genre? This new release allows you to do what you've always wanted to do with The Sims, I won't say what, but it DOES add to the overall realism of the game. Social interaction is taken one step further in this new version of the Sims. Cost: $30 US, Must have original game.Purchase here
  • Flight Simulator 2002: Looking for that ultimate experience in flight simulation? Look no further. Microsoft has once again topped the charts and set new records with their latest addition to the popular Flight Simulator series.Cost: $50 US/Pro Edition $70 US. Standard/Professional
There are many other titles out there that one can pick up. I recommend reading reviews, articles, and going out to the store to check out what is hot. Remember, take into consideration any system requirements not met, they are there for something. Without meeting them, an otherwise great game can be turned into a rather miserable experience. If you need that lowest price on the newest hardware to keep up with the demands of these new games, head over to Pricewatch.com.

Serious Sam: Second Encounter Demo Available!
A-KO, [News] 12/11/2001 4:39:00 PM CST
That's right, one can download the latest addition to the Serious Sam series. Enjoy it in all its might, download from FilePlanet.com.

This demo is designed to give everybody a glimpse of what's to come in The Second Encounter addition to the fast and fun FPS action title, Serious Sam. This demo will contain many new enemies, weapons, powerups and features from full version.A new Technology test level packed with some great new features of the Serious Engine is included.

Weighing in at 110MB, I think you dialup users should wait until it's released as a demo cd somewhere, unless you're into 3 night downloads =P Enjoy!

Thanks Warp2search.
