A-KO's Holiday Shopping Guide
A-KO, [News] 12/17/2001 8:16:00 PM CST
With everyone going out and purchasing that brand new xbox, that brand new gamecube, or their PS2 and GTA3 for the holidays, one has to wonder where did all the PC gamers go? Wasn't it just a few months ago that we said consoles could not match the power of PCs? There are still some of us left over. We sit here, pondering what next to buy to handle the power of games. Until then, I've thrown together a list of some interesting games for the PC that you can purchase for someone. Most of these games are violent in nature, so if you're heavy into that ESRB stuff, then don't buy these games.
  • Return To Castle Wolfenstein: You are thrown back into Castle Wolfenstein to once again do battle against Nazi Germany. With far many more enhancements than it's 10 year old brother, RTCW fully immerses you in stunning visual gameplay, incredible enemy AI, and forcing you to use different tactics than previous first person shooters. This is my top pick of the holiday season. It is sure one that would get that tear of joy from your avid PC gamer. Cost: $55 US ; $65 US for Tin-boxed special edition. Don't feel like going to the store? Here's a URL to EBStore.com
  • Everquest: Shadows of Luclin: Want that hip game that everyone is talking about? Then you need Everquest. This is an update to the very popular Everquest series. It adds new models, new textures, and various other new things that will be sure to immerse you farther into the Everquest world than ever before. Geforce 3 and 512MB ram recommended! Does Require Original Game!!Cost: $30 US ; $10 per month, payable in installments for 3 months, 6 months, or one year.(Going by what a friend said for monthly pricing) Purchase Here!
  • The Sims: Hot Date: Ever enjoy commanding people what to do? Did you always like the Sims genre? This new release allows you to do what you've always wanted to do with The Sims, I won't say what, but it DOES add to the overall realism of the game. Social interaction is taken one step further in this new version of the Sims. Cost: $30 US, Must have original game.Purchase here
  • Flight Simulator 2002: Looking for that ultimate experience in flight simulation? Look no further. Microsoft has once again topped the charts and set new records with their latest addition to the popular Flight Simulator series.Cost: $50 US/Pro Edition $70 US. Standard/Professional
There are many other titles out there that one can pick up. I recommend reading reviews, articles, and going out to the store to check out what is hot. Remember, take into consideration any system requirements not met, they are there for something. Without meeting them, an otherwise great game can be turned into a rather miserable experience. If you need that lowest price on the newest hardware to keep up with the demands of these new games, head over to Pricewatch.com.

CDKey Issues with Return To Castle Wolfenstein
A-KO, [News] 12/9/2001 7:19:00 PM CST
I found this little news bit about cd key issues related to Return to Castle Wolfenstein. Paul Jaquays from id software has posted in this forum about various techniques that can be done in case your key is not working, and various causes of the problems. 99% of this is user error, so check your cd keys. However, it's an interesting read to those that are still having trouble. It could even be possible that your ISP is the cause of the problem. Strange one indeed.

Thanks G256.com

Anyways, I'm back up and running and should be good for a while. If anyone has any questions or coments, feel free to drop me an email. My email address is on the help page.

GLDuke Project still going...
A-KO, [News] 11/26/2001 5:35:00 AM CST
Many of us remember the extremely famous Duke Nukem 3D game. However with the onset of Windows 2000/XP, we are no longer able to play it. It was a DOS-based game. Moreso, everyone started going towards 3D Acceleration and making 3d ports of games(GLQuake for example). One person set out on a mission. To design his OWN executable code for an old game. In no way violating copyrights. From bottom up, he has written GLDuke. The project to bring OpenGL to Duke Nukem 3D. It has been ongoing for years now, I know I've been following it for at least 2. So far it's not much of a game as the release version doesn't have gravity, etc. However it's coming along nicely and he's almost got the sector rendering system finished. He has also written gravity and jumping. Soon enough, there will be 3d models implemented into the game. If you want to keep following this project, head over to Virtual Applications, the title of the 'company' that the programmer, Jean Phillip Desjardins, has designed for his programs. Keep up with it, one day it will get released and he should be commemorated for his efforts. This is why I write this post today. He has not given up on his efforts to port Duke Nukem to OpenGL and Windows despite the fact he's way behind anything else. He'll probably even have the port long after Duke Nukem Forever comes out.

Return to Castle Wolfenstein First Impressions
A-KO, [Info] 11/24/2001 11:39:00 AM CST
Return to Castle Wolfenstein is one very, very nice game. The game quality is amazing, and the theatrical music really involves you in what's going on around you. At this point in time I'm in the catacombs. You get a plethora of weapons and you get to stock up on plenty of ammunition. Well, here are some tips thus far for gameplay from yours truly:
  • Secret Areas: They indeed exist in RTCW and keep on the lookout for them. They are fairly easy to find, look behind pictures, book cases, blow up barrels, etc. They do help out especially in the castle.
  • Stealth: Keep your noise level down. The less noise means the less enemies you encounter. Considering that in some areas you are left with 28 health for a while this can be a good thing.
  • Reload: Reload your stock of weapons as often as you can. You get plenty of MP40 ammo from the enemies within the game so reload frequently. There are many quiet hallways that you can stock up your weapons nicely.
  • Be Smart: A definite tip here is to wait behind doors for enemies. Don't go guns-ablazing into a room. Kill one, wait for the others to come out. They are intelligent, but they don't just aim and know where you are. That first few milliseconds of them not seeing you can mean life or death. It also gives you a good time to reload while waiting for the others. It also helps with handling a room full of enemies in which you don't have grenades handy. One at a time will come through the door. They are extremely accurate with their guns.
  • Don't kill friendlies: They also exist in this game in the town area. Don't murder them or the mission will instantly fail. They can also give you handy items.
  • Save Often: This is a personal tip because i never know what is around the corner of that hallway or what's behind that door. Save in spots that it's been quiet for a while and you come upon a door. You never know what to expect. If you save right behind it, at least you know what to expect through it next time.
    More Helpful Hints:
  • Conserve Grenades: You'll need these in the catacombs for the fire breathing guys. No point in wasting MP ammo on them.
  • Watch out for the knights' shields: Bullets bounce right back off of them, literally. Strafe around the knights to shoot the back of them. They are relatively easy to kill when you get around their shields.
  • Keep your distance to the fire breathing creatures: Yes, they have a long range fire breathing ability. To not get caught, throw a grenade in their path and run back. 2-3 grenades lays waste to them. They even have a loud death sound so you know when you killed one around a corner.
Well, That's all for now. Everyone enjoy this great game. If you would like to know more, read our Return to Castle Wolfenstein page. If you haven't purchased it yet, do so. I'll keep up with some more helpful hints as the day goes by while I play the game. It's definitely a fantasic game to play and I really really recommend it to veteran first person shooter players(those that don't think Unreal Tournament and Counter-Strike are the best first person shooters out there).

Attention 128MB ram users!!!

Upgrade that memory! Memory is dirt cheap now and having more ram means a much better experience in the game. You will be able to turn all the details up and it won't kill your system to do so. The game actually looks 'not so good' on normal settings. If you in fact cannot buy more ram, then set com_hunkmegs to 64 and com_soundmegs to 16. The defaults are 72 and 24. I understand your pain(128MB ram user here). This will help to alleviate it until you can get more ram.

Return to Castle Wolfenstein has gone GOLD!
A-KO, [News] 11/15/2001 1:30:00 PM CST
One of the most anticipated games of the year has finally gone gold. id software's and Gray Matter Studios' joint game has officially gone gold. Here is the snippet from Todd Hollenshead's plan.
WoooHOOOO! Wolf is golden indeed. Congrats to Gray Matter, Activision and Nerve for all of the hard work they have put in over the last 2+ years we've been working on this game. If you're interested in the sweet collectors' tin boxes (that come with a cool poster and a sew-on Wolf logo patch) I think you can still get those through the various pre-order programs at Best Buy (blue), Gamestop/Babbages (silver) and EB (black) while supplies last (these may go quickly now).
The rest of the plan goes on to say that a Mac version will be available soon, however it has not gone gold. The linux port is also coming along nicely but will not hit retail shelves, the binaries will be downloadable.

You will not be able to purchase it directly from id software's site, it will hit retail shelves first. You will be able to pick up copies of the game sometime next week in the United States either before or after Thanksgiving.

Read more about Return to Castle Wolfenstein here.

Thanks G256.com for the tip.

Thanks G256.com

First Impression of game - Wow. The graphics are incredible, the game runs pretty good on my Pentium 3 with 128MB ram and GF2. 640x480x32 and trilinear filtering with a few details kicked up slightly. The explosion effects are top notch, and the light of the water ripples on the ground is heavily realistic. A must download for the user seeking a game that is not only pretty to look at, but also enjoys spaceship-like shooters.

Deus Ex 2 and Thief 3 to use Havok Engine
A-KO, [News] 11/8/2001 1:37:00 PM CST
After some downtime and some computer issues, I am back up enough to post something of interest. As we remember, Deus Ex used the Unreal engine, which was so horrible for the game, that it ruined it for many of the players. Eidos Interactive has made a deal with the Ireland-based software developer, Havok, to use their physics engine Havok in the upcoming Ion Storm games, Deus Ex 2 and Thief 3.

"Games like Deus Ex and Thief are all about player experimentation in a deeply simulated world, so a detailed physics simulation is absolutely critical if we're going to achieve our gameplay goals," said Ion Storm's Warren Spector. "Havok is a powerful, off-the-shelf, multiplatform tool that really meets our needs. You don't often hear developers oohing and aahing, but even the dev team members were blown away when they first ran through a map after we got the Havok code running."

Some Details on the 'Total Havok' Engine:
  • Collision Detection System - Select collision detection methods on a per-object basis, from bounding box, bounding sphere, convex hull, proxy object (i.e. dummy object used for simulation but not display) or actual geometry.
  • Rigid Body Response - Allows specification of mass, elasticity, friction and restitution.
  • Constraints - Springs: objects may be connected via springs, with full control over the spring's rest length, compression / extension and damping.
There is much more information and demos available for download at the Total Havok Feature Guide. More information on Deus Ex 2 can be found at Gamespot's Deus Ex 2 Coverage. More information on Thief 3 can be found at Gamespot's Thief 3 Coverage.

Return To Wolfenstein Multiplayer Test Update
Tack, [News] 11/4/2001 11:39:00 PM CST
For those of you that are anxiously looking forward to the release of Return to Castle Wolfenstein, and have been enjoying the multiplayer test, you might be interested to know that Activision has released an update to the multiplayer test. This update contains the same map, but many improvements have been made to the HUD, weapons, classes, networking, etc., including the following:

  • On the compass, Engineers can see which direction their dynamite objectives are in the world.
  • The Axis team will no longer have the option to spawn in the forward bunker. They can deny the Allies this spawn position by taking the flag from them and returning it to a “null” state.
  • Ammo count modified for many weapons (depending on class as well).
  • Flamethrower’s damage tweaked and movement speed reduced.
  • Engineers now get 8 grenades and another clip.
  • WolfMP is now using full TA networking.
Update By A-KO
I was searching around and found a nice, pretty fast download link for this file. For those on broadband that know how bad Fileplanet can be for this thing, here's a direct download link ftp.fragzone.se It seems pretty fast for me, i'm on @home getting just above 100K/sec, and best of all not waiting 3 hours to download it.

Doom 3 Revisited
A-KO, [News] 11/3/2001 11:06:00 PM CST
I've recently seen the extensive drop in video card prices, and they are nice. However, I've also started to see some rumors come up regarding Doom 3. It appears that most people that I've stumbled across have not seen this interview that GameSpot conducted with John Carmack back on 8/13/01. The interview highlights key elements such as the lighting, some other little nifty programming secrets, his usage of processor vs. 3D hardware, and most of all the video requirements of the game. This isn't exactly new, but it may be new to many.

Motor City Online Released
Tack, [News] 11/3/2001 7:50:00 PM CST
Don't know how this one slipped through the cracks, but I was in Electronic Boutique today looking for Deadly Dozen, when I saw Motor City Online sitting on the shelves, which obviously means that it has been released. A number of car aficionado friends of Gone Blind Gaming have been looking forward to this title, as well as participating in its beta.

Incidentally, Deadly Dozen wasn't available just yet. Seems the announcement yesterday was the shipping date, not the date the game is actually available.

Deadly Dozen Released and Demo Available
Tack, [News] 11/2/2001 9:37:00 PM CST
Deadly Dozen, the new budget-priced squad-based first-person shooter by nFusion Interactive, has been released and should be in stores now for the unbelievably low cost of $19.99.

Aliens vs. Predator 2 Patch
A-KO, [News] 11/2/2001 4:43:00 AM CST
Like we haven't seen this before. Early releases for games and they didn't work all the bugs out, therefore releasing a patch almost directly after the game comes out. This goes for a majority of software nowadays. But, here we go. A patch to version 1.0.9.2 for AVP2. A list of fixes include:
  • Added a "[D]" to the end of server names that are dedicated...
  • Added player rename functionality mid-game (ie. ' Spanky')
  • Added PageUp and PageDown support to the server list
  • Added mouse wheel support to the server list.
  • Added double click join support to the server list.
  • Fixed a couple of bugs that could cause long waiting times on the server list menu
  • Made it so you can hit Escape to cancel an Internet server list refresh.
  • Fixed a problem causing the Alien tail to get stuck in the charged position
  • Fixed it so hitting the reload button after firing a pulse rifle grenade will cause the bullets to reload; previously it did nothing
  • Fixed a problem with pickup objects that give you multiple ammo types
  • Chestbursting from a Corporate player now results in a Runner Alien.
  • Chat messages are now hidden while the weapon chooser is open (mainly for Predators).
Since I cannot seem to find this update directly on their sites, Here are the direct download links. ftp3.sierra.com and ftp.sierra2.com.

Haven't purchases this great game yet? Want to know more? Check out our Aliens vs. Predator 2 page

Thanks Warp2search for the info.

Brief Storyline of Gore:

In the mid-21st century, massive overpopulation and consumption caused irreversible resource shortages over most of the planet. All supplies of fossil fuels were completely decimated by 2031. The agro-mosaic virus outbreak of 2042 triggered the global food riots of 2043 by causing the extinction of all agricultural plant species. Five billion humans, almost half of the earths population, died of starvation  With most cities falling into ruin in a perpetual night of low fuel and no power, street gangs grew into terror patrols, controlling neighborhoods and sometimes entire cities. These terror patrols grew larger and larger, falling under the control of ever more powerful dictators.

More information on Gore including screenshots, the downloadable demo, and other information may be found at the Official Gore Site.

Warcraft III Preview
A-KO, [News] 10/17/2001 11:43:00 AM CST
Gamespot has put up a preview of the upcoming Blizzard RTS, Warcraft III. Sounds like a pretty interesting addition to the Warcraft world to me...Then again I only played WC1 so I'm sure this would go far beyond anything I remember. Some little things that I've read about in this so far.

  • Kodo Beast - Creature that devours anything and if killed before swallowing, the swallowed creatures survive.
  • Wolf Riders - Has the ability to hurl nets at enemies and stopping them.
  • Tauren Chieftain Leader - Shockwave ability causes a ripple effect in the ground and destroys any enemy in its path.

There's a ton of information on there related to more attacks and other creatures, check it out.  More information on this great game can be seen at our Warcraft III Reign of Chaos page. Thanks BluesNews.

Ghost Recon
Zoob, [Game News] 10/14/2001 8:12:00 PM CST
UbiSoft and Red Storm Entertainment are coming out with another Tom Clancy game, Ghost Recon. Here's the synapsis: Russia has fallen under the control of ultra-nationalistic leaders intent on rebuilding the Iron Curtain. This leads to conflict with NATO as Russia attempts to reclaim the breakaway republic of Georgia, and the Baltic states of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. As the war escalates, casualties mount, hostages are taken and the Ghosts are sent in.

Scratch Sketches Tack
Zoob, [Fun] 10/13/2001 4:30:00 PM CST
Scratch threw together a sketch of our man Tack not so long ago. Tack has been using it as his avatar, but I figured it might be a good idea to show off the talent of our man Scratch, and let everyone see this nice drawing. In case anyone is wondering, Tack is wicked good with the mini-gun in Unreal Tournament. That's what this picture is all about.

Click the image for the fullsize picture of it.

Generations Arena Mod
A-KO, [News] 10/6/2001 2:04:00 PM CST
Wirehead has announced that there is an upcoming release of the Generations Arena mod for Quake 3. For those that aren't up to speed, a brief history of Generations.

Back in 1998, there was a mod being worked on for Quake 2 called, you guessed it, Generations Quake 2. It was aimed at bringing the older games up to the Quake 2 engine, via the usage of modifying the game. They used art files, designed 3d models, and really did a good deal of work. It was only partially completed when id software pulled the plug. The problem was that players could download wolfenstein, doom, and quake via a mod for Quake 2...and not have to pay for them. All the models, some artwork, and the levels could stay...Except for ones directly converted over from the original games. Lee Montgomery(LeeMon), the project designer, shut the project down. However, there has been Wirehead re-developing the mod for Quake 3 Arena. This mod has been able to survive the legal issues as the game itself isn't single player, but brings all the classes and maps back for multiplayer carnage.

PlanetSide Beta FAQ
Tack, [News] 10/4/2001 11:50:00 PM CST
It looks like Verant and Sony are finally releasing some info on the beta for their MMOFPS PlanetSide. Although this info isn't earth shattering, it's better than no info at all (especially since this is the first time they have given any info on the beta). We'll be keeping a close watch at the official site for any further developments. Thanks Voodoo Extreme.
  • How long will the beta be?
  • As far as I know, we're pushing for at least four (4) months of beta. This is not etched in stone and could end up being longer or shorter.
  • How open will the beta to the public (100 or 1000 or 10000 players)?
  • At this time, I'm not allowed to make any comments on how many people will be allowed in beta.
  • Will there be a trial period for PlanetSide?
  • Again, at this time, I can't answer your question. However, to my understanding, EverQuest offers a one (1) month trial period.
  • Will we be able to download the game and try it or do we have to spend $50 and pray it's good?
  • No, you will not be able to download PlanetSide. It'll likely be far too large a download.
  • How old do you have to be to test beta?
  • Testers will be required to sign a NDA (non-disclosure agreement) and must therefore be at least eighteen (18) years old to even be considered for beta.

Trade Empires Patch
Tack, [News] 10/4/2001 3:32:00 PM CST
The kind folks at Frog City have gone above and beyond their call of duty and created a patch for their recent release of Trade Empires. The following outlines fixes/improvements...
  • Fixed a bug which failed to remove production lines for obsolete commodities from their production buildings when the superseding commodity was produced at a different type of production building.
  • Improved efficiency of AI planning when connecting markets with new pathways in certain cases.
  • Improved AI ability to build inter-regional pathways between markets.
  • Fixed a crash bug which resulted when both newly obsoleted and still-valid commodities were being carried by AI merchants in transit.
  • Fixed a planning bug which could result in AI merchants being permanently stuck in a market.
  • Added the "German Industrialization" episode.
  • Fixed an AI performance bug which, in more geographically complex episodes, could result in occasional severe lurches.  The behavior has been modified to divide the processing time across several frames and to optimize the operation in general.
  • Fixed an art bug which resulted in the "Rowed Barge" transporter art drawing in the wrong screen location for the yellow player.
  • Fixed a crash bug which occurred under rare circumstances when AI merchants changed their plans.
  • Fixed a crash bug which sometimes occurred when attempting to add a stop to a trade route and no legal markets were available.
  • Fixed a crash bug which resulted from the trade route UI allowing the saving of illegal routes under the right conditions.

Asheron's Call Dark Majesty Goes Gold
Tack, [News] 10/4/2001 1:49:00 PM CST
Microsoft today announced that Asheron's Call Dark Majesty, the expansion for the popular massively multiplayer role-playing game Asheron's Call, has gone gold and is expected to hit store shelves in late October. Asheron's Call has become a leader in the MMRPG genre by providing on-going updates. These updates propel its unique storyline and provide new content and features on a monthly basis. Asheron's Call Dark Majesty will be available for only $20.00 and will include one free month of play. Asheron's Call Dark Majesty includes the full version of Asheron's Call as well as new additions such as housing and storage, two of the most frequently requested features. Players will be able to purchase their own homes on pre-designated locations, as well as use their residence for secure storage purposes. Technically, the expansion improves upon the original by introducing all new models and textures which will now require a 3D graphics accelerator. Regular players of Asheron's Call know that the story-line has continued to unfold monthly for almost two years. The Expansion Pack kicks off the next chapter in the ongoing Asheron's Call storyline by introducing the island of Marae Lassel. Marae Lassel is a sprawling new landmass which will contain new quests, dungeons, and treasures. The island will be accessible to all levels of players who purchase the Asheron's Call Expansion Pack.

Red Faction
GameAddict, [info] 10/1/2001 8:33:00 PM CST
I went out and bought Red Faction after playing the demo for a few days. The first person shooter really comes close to Half-Life's reign as king of the single-player adventure, Red Faction is, by far, the best and most well-rounded first-person shooter released in a long time that I have seen. Not only is it a single-player, but it has a really good multi-player as well. Red Faction Multiplayer has 3 mods. Classic Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch and Capture The Flag. It also has 14 different weapons to choose from as well as a variety vehicles to Hijack. So if you got spare time and your bored of the same old games go download the demo and check it out! Windows XP and Gaming
A-KO, [Info] 9/30/2001 10:44:00 AM CST
Not directly game related, but just some information for the readers. If you have 128MB ram such as myself, prepare to upgrade. Windows 2000/XP have better ram usage but the fact of the matter is they do have a much larger ram requirement than the 9x counterparts. It goes so far as on my Geforce 2 3dmark 2000's 64MB test will NOT run. As well, some of my game performance is down considerably because it just doesn't have the ability to put the textures into video and system memory. This goes extra for those with 32MB video cards. You could always stick with Windows 98 for your games, but ram chips are a dime a dozen now so go pick some up for the best gaming experience on the newest edition of Windows.

For the moment, these jobs pay nothing other than the satisfaction of helping out on a site that we hope will be everyone's "one stop shop" for all of your gaming needs. Return to Castle Wolfenstein Multiplayer Test
Tack, [News] 9/18/2001 8:19:00 PM CST
For those of you anticipating Return to Castle Wolfenstein, I have a treat for you. I have been playing the hell out of a multiplayer test of RtCW that was recently released.  This is basically a demo, but you can only play it by connecting to a server that is running this test.  Don't worry, there are plenty of servers out there for you to choose from.  In this demo/test, the Allies must storm the beach and capture the Axis documents and transmit them via radio. The download weighs in at 63.5 MB, and can be downloaded from FilePlanet. Grab the file, give this game a run, and let us know what you think in our Return to Castle Wolfenstein forum.
